The Role of Islam in Building Tolerance Based on Multiculturalism in Indonesia
Abstract
Indonesia is a country rich in cultural, ethnic, and religious diversity, making multiculturalism an essential part of maintaining social harmony. Islam, as the majority religion in Indonesia, plays a strategic role in building and strengthening tolerance among diverse communities. This study aims to examine how Islamic values contribute to fostering tolerant attitudes and respect for differences within the context of Indonesia’s multicultural society. The method used is a literature study and qualitative analysis of religious texts as well as the social practices of Muslims in various communities. The results show that Islamic teachings, which emphasize the principles of rahmatan lil ‘alamin (mercy to all creation), justice, and mutual respect, form a fundamental basis for building interfaith and intercultural dialogue. Furthermore, the role of scholars (ulama), Islamic boarding schools (pesantren), and Islamic organizations is significant in spreading values of tolerance. However, challenges such as intolerance and extremism still require serious attention. In conclusion, Islam holds great potential as a unifying force supporting the sustainability of multiculturalism in Indonesia through strengthening education, dialogue, and inclusive attitudes in social life.
